Unconsoleable

Games can be fun and accessible even if you haven't been playing them for 20 years. Consoles scare us and we bet they scare you, too.

38: Cheating by Being Good at Things

June 9, 2015

It turns out people on Twitter can be kind of crappy. It's full of "crappy people saying the crappiest things," according to Jessica and Anna doesn't disagree.

In good news, Jessica talks about her panel at MomoCon and we suspect that Splatoon is making people buy a Wii U which is great news for more inclusive game design.

But we go straight back to the depressing stuff, don't worry! Mobile games are apparently affecting marriages in China and Steam's refund policy has us worried.

Please rate and review us on iTunes if you're enjoying the show, follow us on Twitter and email us if you have any questions, comments, but not if you want to tell us to not be worked up about things that upset us!

37: This Shrimp is Different

June 3, 2015

So apparently people listen to our show. This week, we have concrete proof of there being at least two such people!

One of them wrote a piece about us which made clear that he understands our style of gaming discussion perfectly. Yay! The other wrote an iTunes review that... well, just listen to the episode to find out what it said (and what we had to say in response).

We also talk about console/PC game developers getting into mobile and whether it's a good idea. How have they fared so far? Do they respect mobile and want to really innovate there?

If you're enjoying Unconsoleable, please rate and review us on iTunes, follow us on Twitter, recommend us to friends and email us anytime with questions, comments or suggestions of where to purchase a goat ;-)

36: Stop Making Trash Games

May 27, 2015

The evidence continues to roll in that we only have the most awesome and amazing guests on our show. Exhibit A this week is Asher Vollmer, the game designer behind the smash hit, Threes.

It turns out Asher shares our despair about the giant trash pile of awful mobile games and believes that mobile players should be taken seriously and not condescended to. Hmmm, where have you heard all this before???

Given his wisdom, we task Asher with getting other developers in line and also being a spokesperson for our show. That's right, he works for us now** And ZOMG, he has been to the Notch House.

**Not really, cause we have no money :D

Don't forget to rate and review us on iTunes like Asher has (!!!), follow us on Twitter, and email us if you have a Notch house to sell us. Or maybe just some candy :)

35: Funcrastination

May 20, 2015

No, we didn't misspell procrastination in this episode's title. What's funcrastination? We'll give you a clue. Ready? *whispering* It involves games.

We read an awesome email from a listener who's a dad and an indie game developer, give you the lowdown on MRAs while talking about why gaming isn't just for lonely boys, get psyched about what a game like Splatoon means for us as gamers, finally talk about what we're playing, and more!

Please rate and review us on iTunes, follow us on Twitter and email us if you have questions or want to complain about how hard Grim Fandango is ;-)

34: Rocking the Gray Brick

May 13, 2015

It's another sick-cast from your co-hosts! This time Anna is the one afflicted while Jessica is on the mend. But we make the best of it and with the magic of editing, you don't have to hear any horrible coughing!

We talk about how violence in games is boring, how we totally get Hillary Clinton's Game Boy addiction and how design-focused games are winning on mobile. Plus, Jessica investigates games on her Apple Watch. Are they all terrible or are there some standouts? Listen now to find out!

33: Let's Have No Scruples Together

May 6, 2015

On this episode, our good friends Steve Lubitz and Karyl Gilbertson stop by to help us yell at possibly one of the dumbest things ever written about video games. It's definitely up there, we promise.

We also talk playing GTA with your toddler (yes, you read that right), reminisce about playing games ourselves that we maybe weren't ready for, discuss Jessica's appetite for mayhem and an exciting page in the history of Unconsoleable.

Don't forget to review us on iTunes, follow us on Twitter or email us with any questions, comments or game ideas that we can steal ;-)

32: Maddy the Matador

April 29, 2015

Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the fabulously funny, smart and talented Maddy Myers!

As you can see, Anna and Jessica are both unabashed members of the Maddy Myers Fan Club. On this episode we finally got the chance to talk to Maddy about her gaming past, how she came to not hate on casual gamers, feminism, and much, much more.

Don't forget to review us on iTunes, follow us on Twitter (and followAnna and Jessica too) or email us with questions, comments, concerns or offers of millions of dollars ;-)

31: B is for Battle

April 22, 2015

Good news, everyone! Some people in the video game industry actually know that they have a diversity problem.

Not only do they realize that their product is often not welcoming to women, but they also realize that it's prohibitive to more casual players like your hosts.

We also talk about the upcoming King's Quest reboot because adventure games rock, Anna laments being hopelessly addicted to Hearthstone, Jessica can't do rhythm games and we wonder if core games will come to mobile someday or if we can at least start having deeper experiences there now.

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter and rate and review us on iTunes!

30: We Want to Be a Girl

April 15, 2015

Our guest on this episode is a precocious 12-year-old who has momentarily joined us in the fight for more representation of women in games. Mobile games, because she plays a lot of them just like we do. She took her message to the Washington Post and NPR and now she has brought it to our show!

We also talk about the special significance of the new Anita Sarkeesian video and unveil a new way for you, dear listeners, to contribute to the show!

Don't forget to rate and review us on iTunes (seriously, this is really important!) and follow us on Twitter (and follow Anna and Jessica too).
